“Similar to the sound waves echoing from a distant wall, I have sent electrical vibrations toward the remote boundaries of the earth, and instead of the wall the earth has replied. In place of an echo I have obtained a stationary electrical wave”. These were the quotes of Dr. Nikola Tesla while he was experimenting with wireless electrical energy.

Earlier in this series we have seen Dr. Nikola Tesla successfully carrying experiments on Wireless electricity. With this, the genius of Dr. Tesla was making sure that he could actually make wireless electricity available to the entire world and bring one of his dreams for humanity in reality. The dream of Dr. Tesla that he had cherished would have provided every human-being with ample and actually unlimited amount of electricity that too absolutely for free. It would have been just like sunshine or air that we enjoy and utilize irrespective of caste, creed and financial status for free and that too in adequate quantities. Had the then industry captains not suppressed the success of Dr. Tesla’s experiments, these could have been replicated in the real life. While making the above statement Dr. Tesla stated that to help him achieve his aim, “Mother Earth had replied”.

With respect to the opening statement of this article made by Dr. Nikola Tesla, he further stated that to help him achieve his aim, Mother Earth had indeed replied.  Proceeding ahead let us know about the various experiments that Dr. Nikola Tesla conducted to meet one of his aims of unlimited free wireless electricity transmission.

There is a very famous statement of Dr. Nikola Tesla where he states that, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe then think in terms of energies, frequencies and vibrations…” From our last article we have understood that as per Dr. Tesla everything, just everything is composed of nothing else but energies, frequencies and vibrations, and indeed it is. Trees, buildings, rivers, you, I and just everything in this Universe are composed of frequency, energy and vibrations. In the same article we have also talked about and described ‘Vibrational Frequency’. Thus all matter in this universe is made up of atoms and sub-atomic particles that vibrate at a particular rate and the vibrations of these particles are nothing else but vibrational frequency

Today we are going to witness a machine which Dr. Nikola Tesla had designed and built. This machine had amazed the greatest of the contemporary scientists, geologists, engineers and masses and rather continues to amaze everyone in today times as well. We are talking about an instrument called Corona Discharge Ozone Generator also called as Tesla Oscillator. Now be ready to read what you might not have read anywhere. Rather you would be astonished once you read it. Alternately you might also think it to be a fairy-tale but it’s not. What we are now going to read is fact and truth.

Father of Many Inventions

It is well known that a true great man always has an open mind, open eyes and is ears to others. Dr. Nikola Tesla too had a very distinctive quality of always seeing all the things without any fixed assumptions in his mind. For Dr. Tesla, a phenomenon or even a discovery of his own had multiple aspects and viewpoints. This always led him towards a spectrum of uses of a particular thing and this imprinted in his every invention. His ‘Out-of-the-box’ thinking had actually made him master the technique of ‘Jugaad’ that is currently been viewed as ‘The Strategy of the New Millennium’ and actually is considered to be a saviour of the whole world with fast depleting resources. This strategy encompasses the creativity of doing ‘more from less’.

Even in the Madison Square electrical exhibition, only a few people knew that Dr. Nikola Tesla had actually constructed two boats, one that could remotely be controlled above the water and another one that had a hidden antenna and could be controlled from under the water. The untold inference to drive from this is actually to make all the readers understand that Dr. Tesla had infact and actually developed the world’s very first ‘underwater wireless submarine’. But with his customary way and habit of envisioning his own inventions in multitude of ways, Dr. Tesla did not stop there. What Dr. Tesla had in his mind is clearly spelt in the letter that he wrote to Prof. B.F. Meissner of Purdue University.

Every human born on planet earth is blessed with talent and individuality. It is something that no one can take away from him. Wealth, fame and all material things can be robbed, cheated and taken away but this individuality of his is God’s real gift to him. The desire to succeed in whatever field a person chooses is only met if he feels its need equal to the need of air to breath. This quality was best exemplified in Dr. Nikola Tesla.
Photo-26-Tesla-BoatDr. Nikola Tesla’s desire to do something for his God, science and fellowmen was so great that he was willing to face any difficulty and sacrifice anything to achieve the same. His every thought, every living moment was utilized in the pursuit of making mankind’s life on this planet easier, happier and the inspiration he got for this was by observing nature. We must thank Dr. Nikola Tesla for his vision, efforts and inventions which today are making our life easier and saving our time and efforts.
Since his youth Dr. Nikola Tesla had the habit of analyzing his surroundings and making observations and drawing conclusions on the same. Over a period of time, Dr. Tesla realized that our every thought, feeling or voluntary action has its basis in the stimuli from the external occurrences and impressions in our environment which, we do not register because of the lack of training. A simple example to understand this can be taken in form of the sweet smell of a flower that evokes a feeling of happiness in us while an abuse or insult by others makes us feel hurt. Many of the times we even do not think while doing few things as it become reflex for us e.g. drinking water from a glass.

Life presents everyone with many ups and downs. Failure in our work, loss of a loved one or even a mere financial loss is sufficient to push the most optimistic individual into depression. Then just imagine how difficult it would be when one has to witness destruction of his dreams, his achievements and everything that he has worked for in his life. It indeed must be utterly devastating. Faced with this, most of the people would lose their sleep, minds and faith in God.

In the last article we have seen Dr. Nikola Tesla facing a similar situation when his Laboratory was on fire. For Dr. Tesla to see all of his achievements, his dreams, his visions being reduced to smoldering rubble must have indeed been heart wrenching. As a result he withdrew himself from public attention. It is said that Dr. Tesla retreated to a countryside church that his mother frequented when she came to America. It was here that Dr. Nikola Tesla was reborn. He realized that God had kept him alive for a purpose and it was this purpose that he needed to fulfill. Rather than to blame God for this devastation, Dr. Tesla thanked God for His divine intervention that saved him. Dr. Tesla believed that God had allowed this to happen for a purpose and that it meant that it needed Dr. Tesla to put a rethought and change the course of his certain actions.

After a month of contemplation, Dr. Tesla returned to New York with a firm resolve to again start from ground-zero and build everything from scratch. This was indeed a humongous task to achieve. His first goal was to construct hydro-electric power generation plant based on alternating current on the Niagara Falls which had been Dr. Tesla’s dream since early life.

Some more honours for Dr. Nikola Tesla

Original article on Samirsinh Dattopadhye's Blog www.aniruddhafriend-samirsinh.com

Dr. Nikola Tesla returned to New York after his Europe tour. With fond memories and the grief of loss of his mother Dr. Tesla again began his experimental work in his laboratory. But soon he overcame and conquered this sorrow. It was the same year of 1892 when Dr. Nikola Tesla actually received two of the most prestigious honours.
Before his return to New York, Dr. Nikola Tesla was invited by Belgrade municipal authorities to the city of Belgrade (capital of Serbia) to address their citizen about his researches. On June 1, 1892, around 11 pm, Dr. Tesla arrived at the Belgrade Railway station. He was greeted by thousands of enthusiastic people at the station itself, all of them have come to see him, and all of them were proud of him and associate him with his inventions as he was the son of soil of Serbia. All the people presented him with flowers and gifts as he walked slowly through them. Everyone was appreciating him and telling them that he was Serbia’s greatest son. There was a specially decorated horse carriage arranged for Dr. Tesla. He was very emotionally touched with this warm welcome and hospitality.
He modestly told everyone that he was fortunate to have fulfilled some of his dreams till that time. But he further felt his goal to be yet far, if all of his ideas come to fruition, and if he could help the humanity through his inventions, he will consider himself to be proud son of Serbia.
On 2nd June 1893, he met the young Serbian King, Alexander Obrenovic. Dr. Nikola Tesla told him that electricity will have to be introduced in Belgrade city. The King was fascinated by Dr. Tesla’s ideas and demonstrations. In the coming year itself i.e. in year 1893, Belgrade city was electrified. It was a huge and widely celebrated event. The Serbian King awarded Dr. Nikola Tesla with the Medal of St. Sava (Order of St. Sava) for extraordinary contribution to science.

The story of  Dr. Nikola Tesla is one of faith, hope and belief. It is a story of what one individual can achieve and how a single person utterly dedicated to his cause and with unwavering faith in God can move mountains and change the world with his efforts.

When we last saw Dr. Tesla at the World Columbian Exposition, the efficacy of the AC transmission system had been proved and even major detractors like Dr. Kelvin had come round to see the potential and benefits of this system over the existing DC transmission system.

In the mean time due to an increase in his popularity following the success of the World Columbian Exposition, Dr. Tesla started becoming famous in the social circles where one day he met Thomas Commerford Martin. Thomas Martin was an American electrical engineer and Editor of Electrical World magazine. Between the years 1883 to 1909 Thomas Martin served as editor of the Electrical World and was a celebrated author. Incidentally he wasalso son of Lord Kelvin. Martin and Dr. Tesla became good friends.Thomas Martin also compiled and edited ‘The Inventions, Researches and Writings of Nikola Tesla’, a book, detailing the work of Dr. Nikola Tesla up to 1893. The book is a record of Tesla’s pioneering activities, research, and works. The book when published was considered ‘Bible’ of every electrical engineer. The book contains Forty-three chapters, most of them on different areas of research and inventions of Dr. Tesla. The first chapter is a brief biography while the next three chapters are transcripts of important lectures of Dr. Tesla. One of these covers his section of Westinghouse’s exhibit at the Chicago World’s Fair. The book would go on to be a landmark in the electrical sciences. Martin and Dr. Tesla both profited from sales of the book, but Dr. Tesla insisted that its copies be given out for free. Dr. Tesla was completely unconcerned with the financial aspect of the book.

In the era where patents are being filed to legally secure ones control and monopoly over businesses and earn maximum profits through publications of one’s thoughts and to market oneself  by getting ones autobiographies published, Dr. Nikola Tesla did the exact opposite. He was concerned neither about the fame nor the profits that came with the book, but was solely concerned with the advancing of science and its beneficial impact on mankind.

During the same period, using Dr. Nikola Tesla’s patents,Westinghouse Company won the bid to build a functioning power plant on the Niagara Falls. This was a great opportunity for Dr. Tesla. At that time Dr. Tesla was using his Tesla Coil as a prototype to be used as a means of communication. Dr. Tesla dreamed to use electric impulses to transmit linguistic words from one corner of the planet to another without wires. By 1893, Dr. Tesla’s theories on the possibility of the transmission of words by radio waves were proved through his lectures and demonstrations at Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania, St. Louis, Missouri, and the National Electric Light Association. Dr. Tesla’s demonstrations and principles were written about widely through various media outlets. Dr. Tesla perfected the technique to transmit messages wirelessly across 50 miles by 1895. But as Dr. Tesla prepared to perfect this technology for the greater good of mankind, a tragedy struck.

World Columbian Expo – 2

1st of May 1893 marked the commencement of the World Columbian Exposition in a grand style and in full swing. There were almost hundred thousand (one lakh) people witnessing this great fair on the very first day. The spectators enjoyed the Exposition throughout the day visiting various places, buildings and special exhibits, and as the night fell, they were amazed as if a casting spell fell at the venue. Those who were present saw to their utter surprise and amazement the vast expense of the fair being magnificently lightened up by a multitude of lights running at full power on AC electricity that Dr. Nikola Tesla had designed. This was the most incredible display of lighting, the world had ever seen till then. This made the electricity building no less than a wonder of the world.
http://aniruddhafriend-samirsinh.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/tesla-neon-lights1.jpg
Tesla neon lights
In the articles earlier, we have seen Dr. Nikola Tesla modifying the concept of gas filled tubes by passing electric currents of high-voltage and high-frequency through them. With this Dr. Tesla had crafted specially made gas filled tubes and had bent them in various shapes. Further, he had illuminated them by filling up various gases using high-frequency current. This spread of lights displayed spectacular coloring effects which amazed all the visitors who had come at the Expo. These lights were actual precursors to the neon tubes that we see today everywhere in form of advertising banners and displays.
However, it was only after the late 1980s that more efficient high-frequency ballasts (chokes) and gas-bulbs were developed. These bulbs bare great similarities to the bulbs and lamps developed by Dr. Tesla almost 100 years ago. It thus goes on to prove that Dr. Nikola Tesla laid the foundation for fluorescent lighting.
It was believed that Dr. Nikola Tesla developed and used florescent bulbs in his lab some 40 years before the industry actually so called ’invented’ them and started using them in general practice.
There was one more notable experiment performed by Dr. Tesla in this fair. It was widely known as ‘Tesla and the Egg of Columbus’

Wireless Electricity (Part – 1)

Original article on Samirsinh Dattopadhye's Blog www.aniruddhafriend-samirsinh.com
Samirsinh Dattopadhye's FB page , Google Plus

In year 1890, Dr. Nikola Tesla single handedly developed the concept of Alternating Currents; he modified it to give rise to more efficient high frequency alternating currents and then discovered the phenomenon of Wireless Electricity and all this as Dr. Tesla always claimed were in perfect harmony with Mother Nature.
We also know that to defame Dr. Nikola Tesla’s AC system of current, Edison performed things like public electrocutions of the animals. With this Dr. Tesla mainly became upset by the fact that the AC powered electric chair was being used to electrocute prisoners to death. Dr. Tesla being a spiritual person and a highly compassionate individual, his heart reached out to the plight of these prisoners as well as animals who were subjected to this inhuman torture. Dr. Tesla decided to take steps to counter this disinformation being spread by Thomas Edison.
He called for a press conference with the help of George Westinghouse and invited some of the prominent scientists business leaders and the press at his own lab to demonstrate the actual nature of Alternating Current. There he created a setup having AC Generators generating upto 1,00,000 volts of electricity. To demonstrate that AC system if properly controlled, is not harmful to human beings, Dr. Tesla sat next to the generator that was actually generating 1,00,000 volts of electricity. He did this at the risk of his own life for the benefit of people, sake of humanity and to quell all the rumours surrounding AC Current. He emerged from it totally unharmed, there was not a single scratch on his body, this left all the spectators flabbergasted, and people were awestruck to see this. Remember, Edison passed AC electricity through animals and prisoners whereas Dr. Tesla passed electricity through his own body.

Dr. Tesla demonstrating WIRELESS ELECTRICITY
This is also the first time Dr. Tesla demonstrated WIRELESS ELECTRICITYto the public. Yes, you heard it right!! “Wireless Electricity” that is ‘electricity without wires’, and in doing so, he lit fluorescent bulbs and tubes while holding them in his own hands. How did he achieve this? To know how Tesla invented this, we must go back a little to know about the experiments that he performed in his own lab at New York. Dr. Tesla’s laboratory in New York was a multi-level research and production facility in itself. It had several sections, multiple floors and multi level galleries. We can imagine it like a minuscule research and development mall. Dr. Tesla created several transformers and generators in the lower floors, and had his private research laboratory on the upper floors. He also had a staff of a few technicians. Mr. Kolman Czito was one of them and a trusted friend of Dr. Tesla who stood by him for the remainder of his life.
Here, we must note that Dr. Nikola Tesla was extremely hard working person. He built this huge lab all by himself from the funding he received from George Westinghouse. During his experimentation and research whenever he used to discover something intriguing, he used to immediately pursue it by experimental study and with hundreds of permutations and combinations. This kind of study and research gave him enormous knowledge and he was able to formulate new inventions and acquire new patents. This is how he constantly improvised his own inventions and researches.
Dr. Nikola Tesla had developed a more efficient and superior working polyphase AC system that could supply electricity at great distances. But Tesla did not stop there. He continued his research and made consistent efforts to discover a more efficient kind of polyphase AC system, and in doing so, Dr. Tesla started increasing the frequency of his AC generators. With his extensive research he increased the AC frequency upto 30,000 Hz (cycles per second), This gave birth to Higher Frequency Alternating Current. Dr. Tesla believed that such high frequency alternating currents would supply power to the entire world. He built and patented several remarkable generators supplying higher frequency alternating current.
The most remarkable fact about high frequency currents which was discovered by Dr. Tesla is that they were ‘completely harmless’ even when it comes directly in contact with the human body. Even if a human accidentally touches the live current, due to its high frequency, the current would simply pass from the outer surface of the human body, without doing slightest of the damage. In scientific terms this property of current at high frequency is known as Skin effect. This is the reason why Dr. Tesla could demonstrate that the AC system is completely harmless for humans. During his presentation, he touched the live current carrying electrodes with his bare hands and still people could see nothing happening to Dr. Tesla. While dealing with high frequency alternating currents, safety of all the people had alwaysbeen one of the main concerns of Dr. Tesla.

While carrying out a series of experiments on high frequency AC in his lab, Dr. Tesla observed a strange phenomenon which altered his view of electricity forever. During one of his experiments, he took a thin metal wire and applied high voltage AC current closing the electrical circuit in an instant. This sudden application of current vapourized the wire. As he increased the input voltage, Dr. Tesla felt a powerful impact like a blast of needles penetrating his entire body. He first thought that these might be tiny shrapnel from the exploding wire. Tesla rubbed his arms, face and even chest to see if there was any actual damage or penetrations, but there were no signs of such injuries to his body.
Further to this, Dr. Tesla added a thick sheet of glass between him and the experimental setup, also added copper electrodes and stood at a distance of 10 feet, but still the needle like stinging effect was observed as soon as the circuit was completed / closed. Hence he modified his experiment several times with lot of variations, but still the stinging effect was present. This was result of application of electric current at high frequency for a short interval of time i.e. impulse. This was the birth of the concept of wireless electricity. Dr. Tesla, on the basis of these observations, concluded that the circuit being completed instantly caused an impulse of current to travel through the air – i.e. travel wirelessly and hit his body.

All the further work of Dr. Tesla was based on the principles of impulses, frequencies and resonance, all of which we will see in the coming series of articles.

In our next article we are going to see how Dr. Tesla modified this concept of current travelling through air and created the actual working model of Wireless electricity.

The Stepping Stones of Dr. Nikola Tesla

Original article on Samirsinh Dattopadhye's Blog www.aniruddhafriend-samirsinh.com

To witness the ‘War of Currents’ was indeed a most shocking experience for all of us. It brought forth the true nature of Thomas Alva Edison who has been idolised across the world for his scientific discoveries and genius. Edison opposed Dr. Nikola Tesla tooth and nail and yet lost to him without Dr. Tesla doing anything either actively or passively to counter him. Dr. Tesla’s nature and his faith in god is apparent from this instance as he did not get involved in an ego struggle but rather carried on his own work quietly and quelled all resistance through the means of his discoveries and his science. Now let us move to the point from where we left off last time. After resigning from Edison Machine Works, Dr. Nikola Tesla went on to form his own company namely, Tesla Electric Light & Manufacturing in 1886 at New Jersey.
Tesla Arc Lights in New York
Tesla Arc Lights in New York
The first and the most well-known invention of Dr. Nikola Tesla working at Tesla Electric Light & Manufacturing was “Arc Light”. The Arc Lights that Tesla invented were highly efficient and were designed very elegantly in a stylized manner. This Illumination systems of these Arc Lights were installed during those times on the streets of New York. Tesla’s company earned good revenue but it was pocketed mainly by all the investors. The other patents that Tesla received while at Tesla Electric Light & Manufacturing ones for Dynamo Electric Machines. At Tesla Electric Light & Manufacturing, Nikola Tesla had a plan to launch equipment powered by his Alternating Current system. But investors disagreed with Dr. Tesla’s plan and as a result Dr. Tesla was forced out of the company with few meagre stock certificates at his disposal. These happenings paradoxically did happen even though Nikola Tesla was the one who had founded the company.
This left Nikola Tesla nearly penniless. But Dr. Tesla always had a big heart. Dr. Tesla never considered any job, including manual labour to be of inferior grade and this, supported him during this precarious phase of his life. Dr. Tesla worked as a ditch digger. But Dr. Nikola Tesla had a tendency to always bounce back from the worst possible conditions. This was only due to his firm unshakable faith in God. We can also conclude that this was the prime reason why God also never let him down. Dr. Nikola Tesla has exemplified this quality on number of other occasions as well and this situation was no exception to it.
Dr. Tesla working as a ditch digger
Dr. Tesla working as a ditch digger
In April 1887, Dr. Nikola Tesla started with a new company named ‘Tesla Electric Company’. Tesla had found this company with the financial backing of New York attorney Charles Peck and director of Western Union, Alfred Brown. Tesla’s primary aim behind floating this company was to work further-on and propagate his alternating current system and devices powered by it. Accordingly a laboratory was created for Dr. Tesla by the Company at Manhattan to carry on with his work. Here in the year 1887, Dr. Tesla constructed a brushless alternating current induction motor, based on a rotating magnetic field principle which we have already seen. Nikola Tesla also received a patent for this brushless AC induction motor of his in the year 1888.
In the same year the editor of Electrical World magazine, Thomas Martin who was a friend of Dr. Nikola Tesla arranged for him to demonstrate his alternating current system, including his induction motor, at the gathering of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) which is now famously known across the world as IEEE i.e. the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The demonstrations startled just everyone who was present. During the demonstration, Dr. Tesla also showed superiority of AC system over DC and clearly demonstrated the advantages of AC system over DC.
This gathering was attended by the who’s who of industry and science; the demonstration hall was filled with researchers, physicists, engineers, technologists, business leaders and media personnel. During this gathering Dr. Tesla proposed his AC system to produce electricity and optimize it for supply of power to factories, industries, transport systems, households, etc. Also, it was here that Dr. Tesla envisioned his AC system that would in-turn lead to new discoveries and would revolutionize life on our planet. Though extremely impressed, the business leaders who were present at the gathering asked for guaranties of successful implementation of Dr. Tesla’s AC system if adopted. The meeting was also attended by a visionary business magnet, George Westinghouse who then headed the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company. Not only was Westinghouse keen to secure the viable AC motor and power system of Nikola Tesla but he was also extremely impressed by this demonstration in front of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers that reflected Nikola Tesla’s belief in himself and his confidence that he had on his technologies and science.
Dr. Nikola Tesla- George Westinghouse
Dr. Nikola Tesla- George Westinghouse
After the end of this gathering, George Westinghouse approached Dr. Nikola Tesla and invited him for a dinner at Waldorf Hotel. It was here that the relationship between Dr. Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse was stitched together. During this meeting Westinghouse proposed to buy all of Dr. Tesla’s patents of AC system for a million dollars. Westinghouse also promised Dr. Tesla, freedom to decide how his technologies behind these patents would be used at Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company. Finally the meeting ended with Westinghouse promising Tesla to pay one dollar for every horsepower of electricity produced and distributed by his plants that would be run on Dr. Tesla’s AC systems. In the coming days, Westinghouse also hired Nikola Tesla as a consultant at their Pittsburgh lab. During his time at Pittsburgh Tesla created an alternating current system to power streetcars. Yes by streetcars I mean electric cars. It is worth noting that the concept of fully evolved electric car running of roads is yet to happen in this world. But here we see this genius, Dr. Nikola Tesla, way back in the late 1880s’ building a detailed and an evolved AC current system to power streetcars.
Further in 1891, at the age of 35, Nikola Tesla was given citizenship of the United States of America which he valued a lot. The same year, another laboratory was created under Dr. Nikola Tesla at South Fifth Avenue and later another one at Houston Street both in New York. Here he lit electric lamps wirelessly at both of these laboratories, providing evidence for the potential of wireless power transmission. Yes, WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION also knows as ‘Tesla Effect’. Doesn’t it sound amazing and astonishing? Also remember the fact that we are talking about the year “1891”.
What we have seen of Dr. Nikola Tesla so far were very generic and basic inventions of his. And yes, your guess is right!!! Very soon we are going to enter the world of inventions of Dr. Nikola Tesla that though seem ethereal and supernatural but are yet totally and perfectly logical and scientific, and have spiritual basis as all of the inventions of Dr. Nikola Tesla.
